An Honors Program Committee was formed in 1969. The Honors Program first appears in the 1972 – 1973 catalog. This program was conceived to allow more academically capable students to enrich their higher education experience. Program requirement included a series of freshman and sophomore seminars as well as a final senior seminar. The Honors Program continued through 1994/95 when it started to go through a series of changes that reflected the growth of UNT and the interdisciplinary nature of the scholarship. The following are the names that have been used: 1995/96 – 1997/98 Classic Learning Core Honors Program; 1998/99 – 2003/04 University Honors Program; 2005 to present The Honors College. On March 14, 2005, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the Honors College.
