Neal Smatresk is UNT’s 16th president. Before joining UNT, Smatresk served as president at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas for five years and as provost there for two. Previously, he worked at the University of Hawaii at Manoa from 2004 to 2007, where he was vice chancellor for academic affairs and deputy chancellor. He began his career at the University of Texas at Arlington and served there for 22 years as a professor of biology (1982-2004), chair of the department of biology (1994-1998), and the Dean of Science (1998-2004). Smatresk earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biology from Gettysburg College and SUNY Buffalo, respectively, finishing his education with a Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980 and a postdoctoral position with the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1980-1982.
