Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of about 50 recordings, primarily 78 rpm records, and includes various versions of Louchheim's own works along with copies of relatively obscure early recordings of international music.

Biographical Note

Stuart Fleischer Louchheim was born in 1892 to Joseph A. Louchheim, a clothing manufacturer, and Theresa F. Louchheim, in Philadelphia, PA. After serving as a major in the U.S. Army during the First World War, he was successful as a businessman and patron of the arts in addition to his work as a composer. His best-known work, "Mixed Emotions," was recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington, among others.
