Abstract

Papers (1958-1982) of Merrill Ellis concerning his career as a composer and teacher of musical composition including correspondence, legal documents, literary productions, printed material, and photographic material.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Correspondence (1966-1976), legal documents, literary productions (biographical, 1966-1977), information for the Standard Awards Panel, Electronic Music Composition Manual, and newsletters and articles.

Printed material (brochures, 1962-1980), clippings (1968-1980, undated), flyers and lists (1968-1980, undated), and programs (1958-1982, undated).

Photographic materials (positive prints).

Collection Historical Note

Merrill Ellis (1916-1981) was a composer and teacher of musical composition. He was a member of the School of Music faculty at North Texas State College / North Texas State University in Denton.

Professor Ellis was Director of the Electronic Music Center at the North Texas State University School of Music and was awarded a faculty research grant "to study and develop new techniques of artistic communication in the fields of analogue synthesis of sound and light, computer applications to the arts and intermedia art vehicle."

In 1975 Professor Ellis received an award for his contributions to serious music from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP).
