Papers, photographs and publications focusing on the Laboratory School that were created by Virginia Clarke.  Ms. Clarke was the head of the Laboratory School.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Virgina Clarke was the head of the library at the Laboratory School at the University of North Texas.  This collection contains her publications (her thesis and printed material  reflecting her work in library service and the development of audio/visual materials in library), photographs, and information on her career.

Virginia Clarke was the head librarian at the Laboratory School at UNT.

Biographical Note

Virginia Clarke (1907 – 1997) received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from North Texas State College, now known as the University of North Texas. Ms. Clarke served as a teacher and librarian in her hometown of Albany, Texas before joining UNT.  She served as the librarian for the Laboratory School at UNT from 1946 to 1970.  The Laboratory School was a teaching facility for students perusing a career in teaching.  It contained classes for students from kindergarten to twelfth grade.  In 1970, Ms. Clarke resigned as librarian with the Laboratory School to accept a position with the Tarrant County Junior College in Fort Worth. Ms. Clarke was named a UNT Distinguished Alumni in 1986.  This award honored her for her years of service as a librarian, her leadership in developing and promoting audiovisual collections in school libraries, and her work as a consultant for school libraries in Texas and Oklahoma.

This is a stapled copy of "a graded list of some of the distinguished books purchased for the Laboratory School Libary since 1958." The books listed represent titles intended for kindergarten to senior high school students.

"Certificate of Award, This Certifies that Virginia CLarke is awarded this Certificate for an expression of appreciation of your years of service as Teacher, Mentor, Friend to the students of North Texas Laboratory School System; Given at Denton, Texas, this 4th day of November, A. D. 1977."  The certificate is signed by the Homecoming President and the Homecoming Secretary.
