Ms. Clarke served as a teacher and librarian in her hometown of Albany, Texas before joining UNT.  She served as the librarian for the Laboratory School at UNT from 1946 to 1970.  The Laboratory School was a teaching facility for students perusing a career in teaching.  It contained classes for students from kindergarten to twelfth grade.  In 1970, Ms. Clarke resigned as librarian with the Laboratory School to accept a position with the Tarrant County Junior College in Fort Worth.
