Abstract

Papers of Frederick Hawthorne Minor and Katherine Louise Minor and family concerning his personal, business, and political life. Including audit reports; bank statements; bonds; booklets; books; brochures; bulletins; cards-personal and business; certificates; checks; and clubs. Also included are correspondence (personal and family, business), printed material, publications, and photographs relating to Fred Minor's polictical career as a member of the Texas House of Representatives (1927 - 1933) and as Speaker of the Texas House (1931 - 1933). Also included are legal documents concerning his Denton, Texas law practice (1917 - 1926), (1948 - 1951) and his correspondence and reports as a member  and chairman of the Texas Liquor Control Board (1943 - 1949). There is material from the Denton Chamber of Commerce, the Denton City Commissioner, Denton County Democratic Executive Committee,  and the Denton School Board. There are also deposit slips, a directory, floor plans, handbills, handbooks, insurance policies, journals, ledgers, lists of addresses, birthdays, guests, and jurors. There are manuals, maps, memorabilia, news clippings, newspapers, pamphlets, photographs, plaques, poems, programs, promotional material, property records, receipts, regulations, school material, scripts songs, speeches and speech resources. There is also tax records, Texas Gubernatorial campaign and impeachment material, Texas Liquor Control Board material, Texas Speaker of the House material and travel material.

Materials related to Frederick H. Minor and his wife, Katherine Louise Minor.  Materials related to Frederick H. Minor include: correspondence, photographs, law school material, memorabilia, Denton Kiwanis Club, Denton County Democratic Executive Committee material, Denton City Commissioner material, political papers, Texas Liquor Control Board material, speeches and resource material, law firm material, publications.

Materials related to Katherine Louise Minor include programs and playbills, travel related materials, bulletins and records of the Denton Ariel Club and the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs, personal correspondence and clippings.

Also includes materials related to the family of Katherine Louise (Johnson) Minor, including financial material and clippings about her father, J. H. Johnson.

Biographical Note

Fred Minor was born on December 11, 1888 to John Rufus and Elizabeth Matilda (Boyd) Minor.  He attended Denton County schools, Lewisville grade and high schools, and North Texas State Normal College (now known as the University of North Texas).  He earned a teacher's certificate.  He taught elementary school for four years before entering the University of Texas law school.  He received his LL.B in 1916, graduating first in his class. Minor would practice law in Denton, Texas from 1917 until his death. He married Katharine Johnson in 1920 and they had one child.  He served as Denton County Democratic chairman from 1918 to 1924.  He was elected to the Texas legislature in 1926 and would serve until 1933. He served out W. S. Barron's term as speaker of the House and was elected to that position in 1931. He also served on the Liquor Control Board from 1943 - 1948. He was the chair of that board during his last year of service.  He also a member of the Texas Civil Judicial Council, the Denton City Council (for eight years), and  the Denton Board of Education (for sixteen years). He was named a distinguished alumnus by UNT and was awarded the Otis Fowler Award, the highest honor given by the Denton Chamber of Commerce. Fred Minor died on April 24, 1976.
