Collection Historical Note

The Model Cities Program was authorized November 3, 1966 by the Demonstration Cities and Metropolitan Development Act of 1966. It was part of President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society and War on Poverty initiatives. The Model Cities Program was developed in response to concerns about urban violence and ineffective urban renewal programs. Emphasis was placed on comprehensive planning by citizens. Historians consider Model Cities to be the least effective of the Great Society programs due to problems arising from competing local interests, bureaucracy, and insufficient funding. The program was shut down in 1974. ("Model Cities Program," Wikipedia)
