Collection Historical Note

David Aiken Webb was born in 1917 in Greenwood, South Carolina and died in Denton, Texas in 2010. He received bachelor's degrees from the University of South Carolina and Emory University, a master's degree from the University of Michigan, and a doctorate from the University of Chicago. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during WWII as a surgical technician in the Aleutian Islands. He was married to Ruth Hammerle and had two children.

In 1953, Dr. Webb was hired for the dual directorship of Director of Libraries and Director of the Department of Library Service at North Texas State College. In 1963, under his leadership, a new Master of Library Science degree was created, replacing the fifth-year BA degree in library service. He continued his leadership by securing accreditation of the new program through the American Library Association in 1965-1966. In 1967 he resigned his leadership of the library school to focus on his role as Director of Libraries. He served as director through important changes in the library, such as opening stacks to students, the building of Willis Library, and the introduction of computers into the library.
