A collection of ambrotypes, cartes de visite, and correspondece belonging to Charles Deforest Fredricks.

Collection Historical Note

The Charles Deforest Fredricks Collections is comprised of ambrotypes, cartes de visite, and correspondence. Charles D. Fredricks began his career in photography by chance; a trip to South America to visit his brother and an experience to see the process of creating daguerreotypes sparked his interest in photography. His first studio was in Paris in the early mid-19th century where he learned how to create Talbotypes. This type of photograph used a process which transferred the image onto paper, making the photographs more portable. With his experiences and skills from his time in Paris, Fredricks moved to New York City and brought to the city, as well as the country, the cartes de visite craze.

For twenty years in the mid-to-late 19th century, the photography studio of Charles D. Fredericks was the grandest and most chic gallery in New York City. Success in New York gave Fredricks the chance to travel. On one of his travels to Havana, Cuba, Fredricks began to document the city and later opened up a studio. Fredricks continued to add to his portfolio until the late 19th century. With a focus on the growth of cities in South America and Cuba, Fredricks also shot many prominent politicians, Civil War heroes, and actors. Leaving behind an indelible mark in the world of photography, Charles D. Fredricks passed away in 1894 in New York City.

This box contains two series: Correspondence, from 1864 and 1865 and photography, from 1860s-1870s.

The correspondence series includes letters from Louise Fredricks, Henry A. Avery, and Oliver D. Taylor to Charles D. Fredricks.

The photography series is composed of ambrotypes and cartes de visite. The ambrotypes are unidentified. The cartes de visite include four identified photographs: Fredicks himself, his wife, Mrs. W.R. Blake, and Madoline Henriguez.

This letter is from Henry A. Avery to Charles D. Fredricks. In his letter from New York City, Avery details the goings-on since their last correspondence including inquiries into Fredrick's time in Havana, Cuba. Avery discusses business of the New York Studio with Fredrick's, noting what has gone on since Fredricks left for Cuba. Avery's discussion also includes his trip to the Paris studio.The letter is 15 pages in length.

These letters are from Louise Fredricks and O.D. Taylor to Charles D. Fredricks. In her letter from Summit, New Jersey on April 18, 1865, Louise details the goings-on since their last correspondence including inquiries into Fredrick's time traveling in Havana, Cuba. She notes that she has received four of his letters and furthers that the nation is in mourning for President Abraham Lincoln.

In his letter from New York City on April 19, 1865, Oliver D. Taylor details the goings-on since their last correspondence including inquiries into Fredrick's time in Havana, Cuba. He notes that the city's businesses have been halted since the death of President Abraham Lincoln. He also mentions that he has been with his ill brother since last night and will be able to send money to Fredricks for the lottery.

In her letter from Summit, New Jersey on April 25, 1865, Louise details the goings-on since their last correspondence including inquiries into Fredrick's time in Havana, Cuba. She notes that she has received his letters and one in particular written on Good Friday was a devastating day for America as that was when President Abraham Lincoln was killed. The day she is writing the letter is the day that Lincoln's memorial is passing though the city of New York. She mentions that their daughter Allie has woke up with a earache and is cross, though she still sends a kiss to her father. She closes that all send love.
