Abstract

This collection is comprised of centennial committee documents, project plans, alumni records, event memorabilia, various university publications, correspondence, activity reports, meeting agendas, certificates, newspapers, and photographs. Though a majority of the included materials relate directly to the University of North Texas's centennial, materials and records of other university celebrations are included as examples and inspirations for UNT's 100th anniversary.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The materials included in this collection will aid researchers looking to dissect the intricate planning processes and sheer amount of inter-departmental cooperation and effort required to celebrate the University of North Texas's 100th anniversary. This collection includes plans and meetings leading up to the centennial; advertisements, publications, event information, and photographs created in the midst of the celebrations; and reports, correspondence, and certificates written after the centennial had passed. Researchers will discover meeting minutes and project plans covering the minutest details, to large-scale committee reports spanning the entirety of the celebrations.

Furthermore, within this collection is an entire series dedicated to the systematic editing process of UNT’s book, Down the Corridor of Years. Multiple versions of the publication, book notes, and even order invoices allow scholars to conceptualize the process of creating a comprehensive history of a university. Finally, certificates of recognition and congratulation as well as proclamations and resolutions included in the oversized materials provide a glimpse into the respect and support the University of North Texas garnered for reaching such a historic milestone.

Collection Historical Note

“It will be our aim to become leaders in the education of the young men and women of Texas, fitting them to creditably fill the most important positions in business and professional circles. We desire the cooperation of all who believe in higher education and who want to see our state in the very front of intellectual as well as material progress.” – Joshua C. Chilton

On September 16, 1890, Joshua C. Chilton rented a small space above a hardware store in downtown Denton with the sole purpose of establishing the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute; a mere 70 students enrolled. However, after its initial launch, the college began to expand rapidly. In 1891, the Normal Building became the first constructed campus building. The North Texas Normal College replaced the original two names in 1894 and by 1901 the college began receiving state funding and changed its name yet again to North Texas State Normal College. 1913 was a big year for the school; the first library was opened, over 1,000 students enrolled, and the first official sports began. Just as World War I was beginning, standard four-year degrees became available. In 1923, the college became known as the North Texas State Teacher’s College and as the 30s rolled around, the school became one of the first in the nation to provide adult education courses. A new library and the construction of the first on-campus dorms marked the decade as a period growth and expansion. However, in the 40s NTSTC served as a military training site for World War II and enrollment dropped by half as students left the country to serve. In 1949, “Teachers” was dropped from the school’s name and it became North Texas State College. Doctoral programs began and the first African American students enrolled during the 1950s. Enrollment broke into the 10,000s during the 60s and the college became an official university in 1961, now called North Texas State University, or NTSU. During the 80s, enrollment hit over 20,000 and in 1988, the University experienced one last name change to The University of North Texas. On September 16, 1990, the University of North Texas celebrated its official 100th birthday and built the Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building and the Murchison Performing Arts Center. Now in the 2000s, enrollment is at an all-time high, UNT is ranked as a Tier One research university, and can boast a unique and diverse community of students and teachers. From humble beginnings, an impressive university emerged.
