Collection Historical Note

David Jones Eddleman was born in Kentucky in 1834 to James Eddleman and Cynthia Ann Douthitt. The Eddleman family came to America from Germany in 1762 and participated in the Revolutionary War, later also becoming involved in the Civil War where DJ Eddleman and two of his brothers served with the Confederate Army. Afterwards, DJ Eddleman assisted in bringing up the town of Denton, Texas, by serving twice as mayor and Masonic Grand Lecturer of Texas, helping to establish the first local Christian church, and participating in many of its leading enterprises including beginning the first daily newspaper in the territory.

David Jones Eddleman and Mary Daugherty married in 1866 and remained active members of their community throughout their lives, being instrumental in many ways to the fostering of Denton, Texas and Muskogee, Oklahoma.
