Abstract

A collection of documents, photographs, and personal papers that were donated to the former museum on the University of North Texas campus that was known as the Historical Collection.  The collections have various donors.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The materials that are held include photographic prints and negatives, artifacts, business and organizational records, papers from university alumni, university and school organizations documents, and items of general historical interest.

Acquisition Method: Transferred to Archives from the Historical Collection in 1986. The Art Department transferred the Texas County Courthouse slides to the University Archives.

Images of members of the Penitentes, more formerly known as the Brothers of the Pious Fraternity of Our Father Jesus the Nazarene, or as Los Hermanos.  This is a lay fraternity of Spanish-American Roman Catholics.  They are primarily located in New Mexico and Colorado. The images in this collection are black and white negatives that show churches, moradas, religious items, and members.

Box 34: Beulah Harriss ScrapbookAdd to your cart.

Beulah Harriss, moved from Nebraska to Texas to join the faculty of the North Texas State Normal College (now the University of North Texas) in 1914.  She was the first woman hired as a member of the athletic faculty. Ms. Harriss supervised physical education classes for all students as well as the women’s athletic program, including coaching women’s basketball.  The women’s team played three undefeated seasons between 1918 and 1920, to be recognized as the champions of the State of Texas. Beulah Harriss was active in the community as well, organizing the Denton Girl Scouts in 1919. Miss Harriss founded the Green Jackets Club in 1926 as a service and spirit organization at North Texas.  Miss Harriss served as faculty advisor for this organization for four decades. She retired in 1960 and died in 1977 at the age of 88.

The scrapbook documents the early women's basketball teams, the classes Ms. Harriss taught, and the general life on campus during the mid-1900s.

The second side has newspaper clippings.  The longest one is titled "Chaucer Masquerade," which covers the dramatization of parts of Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" by Miiss Morley's and Miss Hornbeaks English classes.  Izetta Sparks played "The Fox."

The second side has a collection of humorous clippings.

Co., Dallas" on it. The second side of the leaf has one black and white photograph that shows two women with a group of children by a creek. There are seven homorous clippings attached to the page.

The second side has two chocolate wrappers, one from Pangburns, and a recipie for Fudge.  This page is dated "Nov. 23, 1924.
