Scope and Contents of the Materials

The DIVA Volleyball Collection (1997-2016) is comprised of papers, photos and artifacts from the Dallas Independent Volleyball Association (DIVA). Volleyball events such as the annual Fall Classic, as well as the NAGVA Championships and awards associated with the group are present in this collection. The materials include events such as the Miss DIVA contests, DIVA's Next Top Model, as well as the Bachelor Auction. Various items, such as t-shirts, banners, calendars, flyers and miniature volleyballs with the DIVA logo are part of this collection. Photographs document the events of the organization, such as fundraisers and tournaments, as well as DIVA's involvement with the Dallas community. Meeting minutes and other organizational papers cover the history of DIVA from its early years.

Collection Historical Note

DIVA, or Dallas Independent Volleyball Association, is an LGBT organization brought together with the intent of playing volleyball at both amateur and more experienced levels. The organization started in 1989 when a group of friends from Oak Lawn began developing it into the larger group it is today. Beginning originally with only six teams in 1989, the group is now comprised of 54 teams, with a membership of about 400 individuals.
