Historical Note:

An Honors Program Committee was formed in 1969.  The Honors Program first appears in the 1972 – 1973 catalog. This program was conceived to allow more academically capable students to enrich their higher education experience.  Program requirement included a series of freshman and sophomore seminars as well as a final senior seminar.  The Honors Program continued through 1994/95 when it started to go through a series of changes that reflected the growth of UNT and the interdisciplinary nature of the scholarship. The following are the names that have been used:  1995/96 – 1997/98 Classic Learning Core Honors Program; 1998/99 – 2003/04 University Honors Program; 2005 to present The Honors College.  On March 14, 2005, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved the Honors College.  As stated in the 2006/07 catalog, the goals for the College are as follows: “Through challenging and supportive environment of honors classes and special programing, members of the Honors College community can build a broad educational foundation in preparation for studying at the graduate level, establishing a career and meeting the demands of responsible citizenship.”
