Name: Marcus Duarte, Jr. (1995-2002)
Historical Note: Marcus Velasquez Duarte Jr., was born on January 15, 1915 in Bridgeport, TX. His mother died when he was three years old. He attended the segregated Mexican Only school up to the 8th grade. When he was seven years old, he worked as a migrant farm worker in Winthrop and Olivia, MN in the sugar beet fields and then in the onion, grapefruit and tomato fields in Laredo, TX for 50 cents a day minus 15 cents for transportation. He served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. Upon his return from service, he worked as an Assistant Foreman, a Foreman, a General Foreman, at a Model Design Shop and as a Manufacturing Engineer at Control Data & Unisys. He died on February 17, 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents: Marcos Duarte, Sr. and Inocencia Velasquez; brothers, Merced, Hijinio, Juan, Crestino; and sister Victoria. He was married to Margaret for 26 years and had six children: Chris, John, Margaret, James, Jane and Edward; 9 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He is buried at the International Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
