Biographical Note for Multicultural Center :

The Multicultural Center developed out of the programs and groups created to address inclusion and diversity on the University of North Texas campus.  In the 1970s, the Dean of Students Office sponsored groups and events to recruit, retain, and boost graduation of minority students. Among the notable events was the Black Emphasis Week and the opening of the Women’s Center in the spring of 1974. Slowly the units would grow and move on to other offices and divisions.

The Women’s Center coordinated and supported activities and interests of the female students.  It offered help with career placement, divorce counseling, supplied a roster of area day care centers, and information on courses that covered women’s issues. The first director of the Center was Margot Raskin.

The Office of Equal Opportunity started in 1977 with Alton Thibodaux as its head.  A name change occurred in 1996, creating the Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity. The Office of Equal Opportunity and Diversity combined with the Office of Multicultural Affairs in 1998, creating the Office of Equity and Diversity. It would become the Division of Equity and Diversity in 2001.  Among the high profile events sponsored by this Division is the Equity and Diversity Conference, founded in 1998. The conference was designed to bring together students, faculty, staff and the public to engage in dialogue to raise awareness of diversity and celebrate inclusion.

1994 saw the creation of the Student Ethnic Enrichment Center. Its purpose is to “promote understanding of underrepresented culture within the University of North Texas.” The Student Ethnic Enrichment Center changed its name to the Multicultural Center in 2003. The Center is part of the Division of Equity and Diversity. A few of the programs that are supported by the Multicultural Center are: Asian Pacific Islander/Desi American, Awards and Scholarships, Black Student Experience, Black/African American, Clothesline Project, F. L. Y. (Fortify the Leader in You) Peer Ambassador Program, Fem Flicks, Few Good Men, Heritage Month Celebrations, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American/Indigenous/ and Volunteer/Intern in the Multicultural Center.
