Brief Description:

This collection contains a card-mounted photograph of the first graduating class of North Texas Normal College taken in 1891 and biographical information about the owner of the photograph, J.V. McReynolds, who was a member of the first graduating class. Each of the 15 men pictured in the photograph is labeled with a number and named by first and middle initials and last name on the back of the photograph. Of the men pictured, 3 (J.H. Alexander, S.W. LaFavor, and J.A. McKinney) are identified as "Creek Indian," and J.A. Sanders is identified as a professor. The back of the photograph also reads “This picture property of J.V. McReynolds 1251 East Morphy St. Fort Worth Texas, Class 1891.”

Biographical information about McReynolds compiled by his granddaughter Marilyn Showalter is also included. This information includes photocopies of family photographs, photocopies of clippings about McReynolds, typed biographical information about McReynolds and other family members, including his two daughters who also attended college at North Texas, and typed information about the Railway Mail Service.

Biographical Note for McReynolds, John Virgil (1870-1936) :

John Virgil McReynolds was born in Winston County, Mississippi on August 10, 1870. His family moved to the community of Llyod, Texas, in 1874. McReynolds attended the North Texas Normal College and was a member of the first graduating class in 1891. After graduating, he worked as a teacher’s helper for no pay before he began working for the Railway Mail Service in Denison, Texas, in 1895 soon after his marriage to Sarah Ann “Sally” Harris.

Through his job with the Railway Mail Service, McReynolds was transferred to Fort Worth in 1896, and his family moved to 1251 East Morphy Street in Fort Worth in November 1906 where he and Sally lived for the remainder of their lives. McReynolds worked for the Railway Mail Service for nearly 40 years and died of a prolonged illness in 1936. Both he and his wife are buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Denton, Texas.
