Biographical Note for Small, Christopher (1927-2011) : Neville Charles Christopher Small was born on March 17, 1927 in Palmerston North, New Zealand. After studying at the University of Otago and Victoria University College in Wellington, and teaching at Horowhenua College and Waihi College, he relocated to London in 1960, spending most of his career in Great Britain. Small, a pioneering musicologist and author, is best known for formulating the concept of "Musicking," or, music as a locus of social participation. He retired in Sitges, Spain, and his personal papers reside at the University of Girona. Christopher Small died on September 7, 2011 in Sitges.
