This collection is arranged in an alphanumeric format by date. Series 1: Papers contains questionnaires, meeting minutes, correspondence, clippings, photographs and articles. Series 2: Audio Recordings contains interviews with Dallas candidates for mayor and city council elections.

The Louise Young and Vivienne Armstrong Collection is an LGBT collection which primarily contains organizational documents from the Lesbian/Gay Political Coalition of Dallas, as well as the Dallas Gay Political Caucus and the Dallas Gay Alliance/Dallas Gay and Lesbian Alliance.

Louise Young was an active member of the Gay Liberation Front in Boulder, Colorado during the 1970’s. Young relocated to Dallas in 1976 with her partner Vivienne Armstrong after her teaching contract at East Central State College was not renewed due to her sexual orientation. Young was hired by Texas Instruments, and in 1993 began a push for workplace equality, a goal that quickly became her primary activism outlet. Since working with Texas Instruments (and Raytheon, the company that purchased their defense contracts in 1997) to develop and implement a non-discrimination policy that covered sexual orientation, Young has helped many other companies create similar policies. Young’s advocacy in workplace equality has gained her national recognition; she was the first female co-chair of the Human Rights Campaign’s Business Council and a past member of the Out & Equal National Advisory Board.

Vivienne Armstrong received her Master’s in nursing from Texas Women’s University and worked for the Visiting Nurses Association, one of the few health providers to work with people with AIDS in the early days of the epidemic. Dallas Mayor Annette Strauss appointed Armstrong to the Health and Human Services Committee in 1986.
