Guide to the Stuart Louchheim Recordings 1951/1958 Music Library Overview of the Collection Stuart Louchheim Recordings 1951-1958 06/023 Louchheim, Stuart, 1892-1971 1.00 Music Library Biographical Information:

Stuart Fleischer Louchheim was born in 1892 to Joseph A. Louchheim, a clothing manufacturer, and Theresa F. Louchheim, in Philadelphia, PA. After serving as a major in the U.S. Army during the First World War, he was successful as a businessman and patron of the arts in addition to his work as a composer. His best-known work, "Mixed Emotions," was recorded by Ella Fitzgerald and Dinah Washington, among others. A 1951 Associated Press article details his ambitions as a songwriter, as well as his affiliation as a distributor for Columbia Records. His 1971 New York Times obituary highlights his philanthropic activities; multiple sources note his role in the preservation of the Philadelphia Academy of Music.
