Jerry Samuels was born on June 3, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He began playing the piano at the age of ten, and graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. He earned a Master of Music in Music Education in 1969 from what is now the University of North Texas, performing with the Five O'Clock Lab Band during his studies. Samuels worked as a pianist, bandleader, and teacher, performing with Lionel Hampton, Artie Shaw, and Clark Terry. He taught at Brookhaven College and Richland College, and served as the accompanist for the Brookhaven Vocal Jazz Ensemble for 19 years. Samuels died on April 10, 2011, in Dallas.
