The Dr. Mary Evans Papers is a collection regarding Mary Elizabeth Evans, the first woman to earn a PhD from the University of North Texas. The collection consists of photographs and a scrapbook.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Dr. Mary Evans Papers contains the personal papers of Mary Evans, the first woman to earn a PhD from the University of North Texas. The collection includes photographs and a scrapbook.

Collection Historical Note

Mary Elizabeth Evans was the first ever woman to earn a doctoral degree at the University of North Texas, named North Texas State College at the time. She achieved her PhD in 1954 while working as a full-time teacher at Wylie High School. In 1958, she joined the Home Economics department at North Texas State College and was named dean in 1969. She passed away in 2014.
