Abstract

Ten audio recordings of oral histories with figures related to the Dallas LGBTQ community. Dr. Nino Testa conducted these oral histories in support of his research.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The audio recordings in this collection cover topics related to the Dallas LGBTQ community, notably Duane Puryear’s life and LGBTQ and AIDS related charities in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

Collection Historical Note

Dr. Nino Testa is the Associate Director of Women & Gender Studies at TCU in Fort Worth, Texas. Dr. Testa is a former The Dallas Way board member.

Duane Puryear contracted HIV at the age of 16 in 1981. He did not learn he was HIV-positive until 1987, when he was 22 years old. After his diagnosis Puryear volunteered with the AIDS Hotline of the Dallas AIDS Resource Center and sought out any opportunity to speak with young people about living with AIDS. In this way, he shaped countless lives for the better. Puryear’s friends remember him as a charismatic and positive person. His personal goal was to be the person who lived the longest with AIDS. He passed away in October 1991 having survived four serious bouts of AIDS complications.

      Jones, who was assigned the sex of female at birth and lived as Stacy Jeanette Jones for 42 years, discusses his upbringing, his career in the Coast Guard, the discrimination he faced as a lesbian, especially as a service member under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," his membership of the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) in Fort Worth, founding Trans-Cendence International, and being the first trans person to run for a position in the Texas House or any legislative election in Texas.
