Biographical Note

T. Jervis Underwood (1932-2017) was an alumnus of UNT, a past president of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America, flutist, composer, poet, and longtime faculty member of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Underwood was born in Harrold, Texas, on March 10, 1932, and grew up in nearby Electra, northwest of Wichita Falls. He graduated from Electra High School in 1949, served in the U.S. Army from 1951-1954, and completed a Bachelor of Music degree in 1955 from what is now the University of North Texas. Underwood continued his studies at the University of Illinois, working part-time in local public schools until receiving a Master of Music degree in 1957. Underwood then held teaching positions at the University of Texas at Austin, and at Southeast Missouri State University. After earning a Ph.D. in music from North Texas State University in 1970, he joined the music faculty of Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, teaching flute, music history, and other courses from 1971 until he retired.

Underwood was inducted into the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity under the supervision of faculty adviser Bob Rogers at North Texas. His induction was the beginning of decades of dedicated service to the organization in various roles, including as faculty advisor to local chapters, as president, and as historian, compiling Sinfonia Songs Centennial Edition 1898-1998, and writing Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia: A Centennial History. Underwood was also a composer and poet, publishing the volume Collected Poems from Here and There. His compositions and arrangements are present in libraries across the United States, including the UNT Music Library. He relocated with his wife, Carmen, to North Texas after his retirement. T. Jervis Underwood died on April 26, 2017.
