Abstract

The records and media of the Oral History Association (OHA), reflecting the work of individual members, often office holders in the organization.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Records of the Oral History Association (OHA) from the individual members or office holders in the organization make up this collection. These include members who were staffed at UNT at the time of their service in the association. The papers give details of the activities of the Oral History Association, charting its growth, activities, and advances in the field. This includes correspondence, newsletters, meeting minutes, agendas, directories, publications, financial documents, reports, memos, notes, book reviews, bibliographies, programs, guides, attendance lists, event materials, travel documents, and the production of the Oral History Review. Media items include cassette tapes, reel-to-reel tapes, VHS tapes, photographs, and slides.

Collection Historical Note

The Oral History Association was founded in 1966 to advance, collect and interpret oral history.  The OHA encourages best practices to guide those interested in conducting oral histories. The organization also recognizes achievments in the field with awards for oral history publications, non print media productions, teaching, and projects.

[Information for the Oral History Association comes from their web site, http://www.oralhistory.org/.]

Biographical Note

Specific to Linda Shopes's records in Series 1, Sub-Series 9: Linda Shopes graduated from college and moved to Baltimore where she lived for twenty-five years.  Her first job was at Mercy High School teaching English, Social Studies and Religion. In the nineteen-seventies, Linda Shopes decided she didn’t want to teach anymore. She enrolled in an American Studies Program at College Park. For next three decades, Shopes worked and gained experience in oral history. She planned projects and conducted interviews. She also trained interviewers and she addressed ethical issues concerning the field of oral history. She was president of the Oral History Association from 1997 to 1998.  Shopes held the position of historian at Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. In 1997, Shopes was the Liaison to the Publications Committee. She contributed numerous published works in the oral history field for more than twenty-five years. She was co-editor of The Baltimore Book: New Views of Local History. She co-edited Oral History and Public Memories with Paula Hamilton in 2008. Shopes has served as co-general editor of Palgrave Macmillan’s Studies in Oral History series. She continues to be a freelance editor and consultant in Oral and Public History.
