The collection is primarily composed of the draft of Lee Huddleston's dissertation.  There is a small amount of correspondence and a copy of the manuscritpt of Dr. Huddleston's book, Origins of the Indians: European Concepts, 1492 - 1729, which was drawn from his dissertation.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection consists of one folder of correspondence, handwritten and typed drafts of his dissertation, and a typescript copy of his book, Origins of the Indians: European Concepts, 1492 - 1729, which is based on his dissertation.  The dissertation and the book deal with what Europeans believed about the origins of American Indians.

Collection Historical Note

The dissertation was prepared by Lee E. Huddleston to meet the requirements of earning a Ph. D. at The University of Texas at Austin.  He received his doctorate in 1966.

Biographical Note

Dr. Lee Eldridge Huddleston was a professor of history at UNT from 1967 to 2003.  He received his bachelor of arts degree from Texas Technological College (now known as Texas Tech University) in 1959 and his Ph.D. from The University of Texas at Austin in 1966.  He taught at PMC Colleges in Chester, Pennsylvania, the University of Arkansas, Colorado State University and Kansas State University. His book, Origins of the Indians: European Concepts, 1492-1729, was published by the University of Texas Press in 1967.  [Much of this information comes from the North Texan Fall 2003]

This box contains: one folder of correspondence which is concerned with the publication of Dr. Huddleston's book, Origins of the Indians: European Concepts, 1492 - 1729. The correspondence is from Cora Eiland Hicks and Lysander Kemp of The University of Texas Press.  There are twelve folders of drafts of Dr. Huddleston's dissertation.  The folders are divided as follows: Dissertation Draft 1 Parts 1 - 4, Dissertation Draft 2 Parts 1 - 4,  and Dissertation Draft 3 Parts 1 - 4.
