Scope and Contents of the Materials
The collection consists of six boxes, which primarily contain Wakeling's translations of libretti in multiple languages, most often written in music scores or copies of them. Also present are materials from collaboration with other scholars and artists, stage sketches, and ephemera.Biographical Note
Dennis Webster Gilmour Wakeling was born in Los Angeles on July 22, 1939. He earned master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Southern California, studying with Walter Ducloux. He also attended Bayreuth Festival masterclasses, where he studied with Wieland Wagner, Wolfgang Wagner, and Walter Felsenstein. He served in the U.S. Army, and directed the Frankfurt Playhouse in 1966 and 1967.
Wakeling twice served as the director of the opera theater at Northern Arizona University, working in between in the opera theater department of the University of Texas at Austin. He joined the faculty of what is now the University of North Texas in 1981, serving as opera director along with Jeannine Crader until 1991. Wakeling was fluent in Russian, French, Italian, and German, and was a member of the Central Opera Service, the National Opera Association, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Wakeling died in Denton on May 13, 1992.
