Abstract
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The papers of J. Baird Callicott (1941- ) document his career as a professor of philosophy at the University of Memphis, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, and the University of North Texas. The collection contains class material, publications, correspondence, grant proposals, and a collection of media that reflects his work as a professor, an author, and his participation in seminars and conferences.Collection Historical Note
Biographical Note
J. Baird Callicott (1941 - ) earned a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) in 1963. He received his Master of Arts (1966) and his Ph.D. (1972) from Syracuse University. Dr. Callicott has taught at the following universities: Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis), 1966 – 1969; Wisconsin State University-Stevens Point (now the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point), 1969 – 1995; and the University of North Texas, 1995 – present. Dr. Callicott was named a UNT Distinguished Research Professor of Philosophy in 2010. He was the chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion Studies, 2008 - 2010. He has served as a visiting professor at the University of Florida, the University of Hawaii; The University of California, Santa Barbara; and Yale University, among others. He has also served as President of the International Society for Environmental Ethics and as Bioethicist-in-Residence at Yale University. Dr. Callicott was the Vice President (1994 – 1997) then the President (1997 – 2000) of the International Society for Environmental Ethics. He is also a member of the American Philosophical Association, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy, International Development Ethics Association, American Society for Environmental History, Society for Conservation Biology, International Society for Ecosystem Health and the International Association for Environmental Philosophy.
Dr. Callicott is best known an exponent of Aldo Leopold’s land ethic. He is the author of numerous articles and books which include: In Defense of the Land Ethic; Beyond the Land Ethic; and Earth’s Insights. He has co-authored: American Indian Environmental Ethics: An Ojibwa Case Study with Michael P. Nelson; Clothed-in-Fur an Other Tales: An Introduction to an Ojibwa World View with Thomas W. Overholt. Dr. Callicott is co-Editor-in-Chief with Robert Frodeman of the two volume A-Z Encyclopedia of Environmental Ethics and Philosophy.
