Collection Historical Note

Alfred Bailey Jolley was born in Fort Worth, Texas on June 7, 1890.  He graduated from North Texas State Normal College in 1907, where he had played on the football team and was a member of the Kendall-Bruce Literary Society.  After graduation, he got a job teaching school, and by 1918 was a principal.  In 1919, he took a position as a Dallas County agricultural agent, and two years later he had progressed to being the head agricultural agent for the county.  In 1953, after 34 years as an agricultural agent, he retired from the Texas Agricultural Extension Service, and took on a job at KRLD-TV and radio station in Dallas as Agricultural Director.  In this position he hosted a radio show at 6:15am each morning. In addition, he wrote agriculture columns for the Dallas Times Herald three times a week.  In 1967, at the age of 77, he retired from his third career.  During his life, he earned a number of awards, including the Honorary Chapter Farmer Award from the DeSoto Future Farmers of America, and the Honorary State Farmer Award.  Jolley passed away on November 28, 1979 in Denton, Texas.
