Biographical Note

Margaret Ellen Nelson Sherman was born in San Saba, Texas to John Byron and Madge Marie Nelson on May 30, 1919. She attended Abilene Christian College, Texas Christian College, and North Texas State Teachers College. She married R.H. Marshall and had two sons Victor and Allen Champ Marshall. After they were divorced, she married Lawrence Farish Sherman on March 21, 1957. From there she went by the name Margaret, not Ellen. Margaret Sherman died on November 14, 2007. Before her death, she wrote for several small newspapers in the Denton area, had a local TV series, and wrote a book entitled Who in the World is Margaret Sherman? She tried to get her manuscript, Texas Unofficial Ambassador in France, published but ended up publishing many articles in the newspapers of the content contained in her manuscript. Her brother, John Byron Jr., was one of the best golfers of the 1930s and 1940s with his 1945 season identified as the best season ever for a male golfer by most. Her younger brother, Charles Wade Nelson, is a musician and author of the memoir, As I Remember. Her son Champ had a mysterious death in Mexico; his bones were brought to the University of North Texas' Human Identification Department where a UNT professor, using DNA testing, found that the bones were not Champ's.
