Abstract

Papers of George David Hendricks concerning material on the American West and Folklore including articles, bibliography, book jackets, publications, drawings, maps, and photographs.

Biographical Note

Hendricks served as an Army colonel during World War II and received a Bronze Star while under the command of General George S. Patton.

            He earned his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. He was a teacher in the Fort Worth and Austin school districts, a teaching fellow at the University of Texas at Austin and a teaching assistant at the University of California at Berkeley. He became a member of the UNT English Department in 1951. He retired in 1978. He was then named  a Professor Emeritus.

            Hendricks published the books Bad Man of the West; Mirrors, Mice and Moustaches; and Rhymes and Railroad Tracks. He was president of the Texas Folklore Society, councilor of the American Folklore Society, and a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Beta Kappa and Kappa Sigma.
