Abstract

Collection of research materials from the United States Office of Education during the Lyndon B. Johnson (LBJ) Administration.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Research materials from the United States Office of Education during the Johnson Administration. Material consists of copies of articles, brochures, clippings, correspondence, documents, graphs, interviews, lists, memos, notes, press releases, reports, speeches, telegrams, and transcripts. Handwritten notes by J. D. Stanley, the researcher whom collected the materials, are found on papers throughout. Based on his notes, it appears these materials were gathered as research for his dissertation.

Collection Historical Note

Lyndon B. Johnson (1908-1973) was the 36th President of the United States (1963-1969). He previously served as Vice President to President John F. Kennedy and was sworn in as president when Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963. Johnson's "Great Society" program pushed to help crime, poverty, disease, conservation, and education. The Department of Education (ED) was created in 1867 and has undergone several name and responsibility changes since. During Johnson's tenure, the department was known as the Office of Education and was part of the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW). It saw the passage of important legislature like the Civil Rights Act in 1964 and the Higher Education Act of 1965. The Department of Education became a separate entity in 1979, as HEW was renamed the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).

Biographical Note

This collection of materials was gathered by James David Stanley as part of the research for his Doctor of Education dissertation, "A study of the USOE, with special emphasis on the Lyndon B. Johnson presidency", North Texas State University, 1976.  His handwritten notes and annotations appear throughout the collection.
