1923-1949 - North Texas State Teachers College (NTSTC)

1949-1961 - North Texas State College (NTSC)

1961-1988 - North Texas State University (NTSU)

1988-Present - University of North Texas (UNT)

Biographical Note

In 1902, the students of the North Texas Normal formed their own athletic teams in football, baseball, and basketball. The school did not formally organize or support any athletic teams at that time. In 1912, the school started a four-year program of study. The students pushed for a more “collegiate” atmosphere that would include organized sports. In 1913, President Bruce hired J. W. Pender to serve as a director of athletics. UNT has since regarded 1913 as the start of intercollegiate athletics.

The school has been a member of several conferences, such as the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the Southland Conference, the Big West, the Sun Belt Conference, and Conference USA.

Over the years UNT have won 130 conference championships, 34 since 2000.

The football program has produced thirty-three All-Americans and seventy-eight players drafted to play in the National Football League. Noted players include Abner Haynes, Arthur Perkins, Bobby Smith, Ron Shanklin, J. T. Smith, and “Mean” Joe Green, among others.

UNT has also had outstanding golfers, such as Sandra Palmer, Billy Maxwell, Joe Conrad, Ross Collins, A. J. trigs, and Don January. The men’s program won four consecutive national championships from1949 to 1952.

Seventeen Mean Green players have been drafted in the history of the program. The latest such player was Tony Mitchell, in 2013.

In track and field some of the outstanding athletes have been Elmer and Delmer Brown and Wayne and Blaine Rideout – two sets of twins who set a world record in the mile and even-eighths relay in 1938; Bill Schmidt, who won the bronze medal in the 1972 Olympics; and Johnny Quinn, who ran track, but competed on the U.S. bobsled team in the 2014 Olympics.

The volleyball team won its first conference USA title in 2017-2018.

The soccer team won the 13th conference championship in its history when they captured the Conference USA title in 2017-2018.
