Biographical Note

Robert B. Toulouse was born in Wellsville, Missouri.  When he was a child his family moved to Abilene, Kansas and Sparta, Illinois before returning to Wellsville.  He graduated from Wellsville High School and then attended a Methodist college in Fayette, Missouri [Central College].  He attended the college two years before transferring to the University of Missouri where he earned his bachelor’s degree in education, science, and social science.  His first job was as a science and social science teacher in Mountain View, Missouri.

Dr. Toulouse was drafted into the Army before World War II started (in June, 1941). He would serve for five years.  Upon completion of his military service he returned to the University of Missouri and completed his master’s and doctorate.

While working on his doctorate Dr. Toulouse met two men associated with North Texas State Teacher’s College (now known as the University of North Texas), George Beamer and Wayne Adams.  Both worked for North Texas and recommended Dr. Toulouse for a position with North Texas.  He joined UNT as a professor in the College of Education in 1948.  Six years later (1954) President J. C. Matthews made him the dean of the Graduate School.  He would serve as the graduate dean from 1954 until 1982.  He then served as provost and vice president of academic affairs from 1982 to 1985.  Dr. Toulouse served as interim provost and vice president of academic affairs during the 1989-1990 academic year.  He was then named provost emeritus. Dr. Toulouse received the UNT President's Award in 1982 and 1990. The Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies was named in his honor in 1990.

The information in this profile comes from the oral history interview with him that was conducted by Tammi Price on October 3, 1995 (OH1080) and an article in the May 2008 issue of the Insider, an online magazine produced by the University of North Texas.
