Scope and Contents of the Materials
Newspaper clippings cover topics of poetry, obituaries, the frontier, gender, religion, marriage, moralism, military, science, wealth, politics, people, and political cartoons. Other items include pressed flowers, feathers, leaves, yarn, and hair as well as school programs, invitations, name cards or calling cards, pictures, cards, and more.Collection Historical Note
Mary E. Boyd's maiden name was Mary E. Crain. It can be seen that her maiden name Crain was sometimes written mistakenly as Crane.
It's noted that Miss Crain lived in New York until she moved to McKinney, Texas in 1876 where sometime in 1878 she married Union Army Captain W.L. Boyd. They were married for 28 years before Mr. Boyd's death in 1906. Prior to her own death in 1937, Mary Boyd recieved the honor of having the original McKinney Boyd High School, built in 1914, named after her. While the original McKinney Boyd High School was condemned in 1959, a new McKinney Boyd High School was built and recieved the honor of being named after Mrs. Boyd once more in 2006
