The Samuel Marino Collection contains a collection of publications, media, photographs, and artifacts that document the achievements and activities of Italian-Americans.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Samuel Marino Collection contains a collection of papers documenting Italian-Americans.  The arrangement of the papers is by type and topic that include: advertising, brochures, clippings, conferences, journals, newspapers, newsletters, organizations, people, and symposiums.  There is also a section on Texas wines.  The collection contains small group of artifacts, books, cassette tapes, photography (prints, negatives, and slides), and VHS tapes. The materials date from 1927 to 2002.

Biographical Note

Dr. Samuel Joseph Marino (1916 – 2012) was born in Connecticut to Mariano Marino and Josephine Pandolfo.  He served in the army in World War II, rising from Private to Captain. He would also serve as a Special Service Officer in Naples, Italy. In 1948, he earned his bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University. He earned his master’s degrees in Library Science and Romance Languages in 1949. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1962.  He married Dorothy Quinney in 1949. Dorothy died in 1983.  Dr. Marino married his second wife, Myrtle (Neale) Nall, in 1989.  Myrtle died in 2009. Dr. Marino was the Head Librarian at McNeese State University in Lake Charles Louisiana from 1961 to 1967.  He moved to Denton to work as a Professor and Head Librarian in the School of Library Science at Texas Woman’s University in 1967.  Dr. Marino retired in 1982. Dr. Marino served his community by serving on the first Denton Historic Landmark Commission, the Denton Public Library Board, and the Denton Horticultural Commission. Dr. Marino was a member of the American Legion Post 71, American Federation of Musicians, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Phi Sigma Iota, Beta Phi Mu, Texas Library association, the American Library Association, the Knights of Columbus 4th degree, and the Denton Noon Kiwanis Club, among others.
