Abstract

The collection documents the career of University of North Texas Database & Catalog Librarian Gerry Smith from her initial hiring in 1968 to her retirement in 1995.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The Gerry Smith Collection is comprised of 8 boxes of institutional and library-related documents detailing the career of University of North Texas (UNT) Librarian, Geraldine English Smith. The collection chronicles her career with items including professional awards and recognition, personal notes and memos, professional correspondences, and numerous notes and agendas from professional conferences and committee meetings. Other notable items in this collection are Bibliographic Control Department Procedures, Library Policy Memos, and photographs.

Significant achievements of Smith's career include being an integral part of the conversion of the UNT Libraries from a manual card catalog to an online system in the mid-1980s, supervising both fulltime employees and student workers as a unit supervisor in the Automated Services Division of the Bibliographic Control Department of the UNT Libraries, and serving on several university and library committees including the University Parking Committee, the University of North Texas League for Professional Women, and the Library Assembly Committee. In 1990, she served as the Faculty Liaison Librarian for the Journalism Department at UNT.

Smith attended numerous professional conferences every year including VTLS, TLA, ALA, and AMIGOS. She also regularly presented training seminars for library staff and authored several in-house publications to accompany them. Professionally, she was a member of the American Library Association, the Texas Library Association, and the VTLS Users Group.

Collection Historical Note

Geraldine English Smith (January 26, 1934 - April 10, 2007) attended Texas Woman's University where she majored in Library Science with minors in Economics and Sociology. She graduated in 1967 with Bachelors of Arts and Bachelors of Science degrees and continued her studies at TWU by earning a Masters of Library Science degree in 1968.

Smith was hired by the North Texas State University Library in June of 1968 as an Assistant Cataloger. In 1971, she was promoted to Catalog Maintenance Librarian and worked in that capacity until 1975 when her official title became Catalog Librarian. In 1988, during the midst of computer automation in the UNT Libraries and also around the time that NTSU officially became the University of North Texas, her title once again changed to Catalog & Database Management Librarian. She held that position until her retirement in November 1995.
