The papers of Velma Cathey record her work as the documents librarian at the University of North Texas.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

Velma Cathey joined the library at the University of North Texas in 1950.  Her papers primarily reflect her work in the 1960s and 1970s. The papers focus on her work as a documents librarian. There are finding aids she used to explain the documents collection to students, notes for presentations to library groups, and information on the growth of the library and the documents department.

Biographical Note

Velma Cathey was an employee in the University of North Texas Library for 24 years. She earned a bachelors’ degree from the University of Arkansas. She started her working life by teaching social sciences in Eudora High School (Arkansas).  In World War II she served as a member of the Waves. In 1948, Mrs. Cathey joined UNT as an instructor in the History Department. She earned her M.A. in History and Government in 1949, then her B.S. in Library Science.  She joined the Library on September 1, 1950.

In 1953, the Documents Librarian, Miss Pauline Ward, resigned and Dr. Sampley, the University Librarian, asked Mrs. Cathey to be the next Documents librarian. She split the Documents duties with her work cataloging. In 1955, Mrs. Cathey was asked to become a full time Documents librarian. Under her direction the documents collection was gathered in one place, the basement of the Information Sciences Library (now the Eagle Commons Library).  She also started a documents card catalog.

Velma Cathy was the chair of the steering committee that organized the NTSU Library Staff Association, which became active in February, 1969. Mrs. Cathey was active in organizations outside the library: the American Library Association (as chair of the Documents subcommittee), chair of the Documents Group, and chair of the Documents Division of the Texas Library Association (TLA). She was also active in Alpha Lambda Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Alpha Theta, Delta Kappa Gamma, AAUW (American Association of University Women), and the Denton Shakespeare Club.
