Biographical Note

President Bruce hired Beulah Harriss in 1914.  She was the first woman hired to work in the Physical Education Department. She taught and coached both men and women. “Miss Harriss had gained respect early at North Texas after her initial “proving” period. “I had three strikes against me – I was a damn Yankee, I was young and I put the girls’ basketball team in bloomers.” [Denton Record Chronicle, 1977-11-04]

In 1926, Ms. Harriss founded the Green Jackets, a women’s service organization at North Texas. The group was modeled after the Orange Jackets of the University of Texas. Ms. Harriss served as the faculty advisor for four decades.

The original organization was for women only.  The membership was came from the best of the women in other organizations on campus.  Membership was by invitation only.  Members served the campus by greeting students, working registration, attending sporting events, and helping at functions and dances on campus.

The organization faded out during the late 1970s, but returned in the 2000s as a service organization open to both men and women. Today’s Green Jackets assist the UNT vice president for student affairs. The members lead tours, help with campus events, and make campus a friendlier place for students.
