Biographical Note

Calvin Cleve Nolen was the president of North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) from 1971 to 1979. Nolen was chosen as the tenth president of the University of North Texas in 1971, even though he did not have a graduate degree. Nolen was president during a period of campus growth. The following structures were built during his time in office: Wooten Hall, the Art Building, the Coliseum, the Physical Education Building, and the south wing of the Music Building. The Union was also renovated and expanded.

Nolen was born in Pueblo, Colorado. His family moved to Austin, Texas when he was in the second grade. He received the nickname “Jitter” from a friend in 1939, at an Order of the Arrow initiation at a Boy Scout camp at Lake Austin. Jitter was a character in a comic strip.  He finished high school in Austin.

He enrolled in the University of Texas, but left to join the Navy. He served three years as a pharmacist’s mate on a tug stationed at Pearl Harbor. Re-entering the University of Texas in 1945, he became a varsity cheerleader, a member of the Friars, and president of Phi Kappa Sigma. He earned a bachelor of science degree in educational psychology in 1948.

In 1951, he joined the University of Texas as the director of the Texas Union. He held that position for ten years before becoming the assistant director of the UT system’s development board (1961-1965). He was the associate director from 1965 until 1968. Nolen joined Texas Christian University in 1968, working as the vice chancellor for development.

Nolen left the presidency under a cloud of accusations of financial impropriety, although he was later cleared of the charges.
