Scope and Contents of the Materials
This collection contains material from Howard W. Smith, Jr.'s time as interm president of UNT from 1981-1982. Items include correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, telephone logs, foundation documents, alumni letters, publications, and meeting minutes from various departments, such as Academic Affairs, Athletics, Finance, Legal, the various colleges, education associations, and the city council.
Collection Historical Note
Howard Welling Smith, Jr. was born on January 19, 1929 in Granby, Missouri. He attend Southern Missouri University and earned his bachelor's degree, before enlisting in the Air Force. He then earned his Ed.D from Missouri State in 1959 and moved to Richardson, Texas with his wife Margaret and son Christopher for his new position at SMU as an education professor. In 1961, the family moved again for Smith's next job at North Texas State College (NTSC, now UNT). There, Smith served as ad interim chancellor and president after serving as associate vice president and vice president for academic affairs. He led the College of Education twice, as acting dean and as interim dean, and was the college’s first associate dean from 1969 to 1976. He was nationally recognized for his work in the improvement of teacher education and higher education. After his retirement in 1997, Smith remained in Denton, where he was an active member of the community in both local arts and his church. He passed away on December 29, 2017.
