Abstract

Papers and artifacts that document Dr. Gretchen Bataille's service as President of the University of North Texas from 2006 to 2010.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection contains materials related to Dr. Gretchen M. Bataille's tenure as President of the University of North Texas. Materials consist of correspondence, presidential files, publications, photographs and artifacts, as well as papers and media related to Bataille's inauguration and the annual Emerald Ball.

Series 1 includes congratulatory certificates, invitations, programs, donor lists, photographs, a copy of Bataille’s inaugural speech, agendas and other planning files from the Inauguration Steering Committee. Also includes invitations, photographs, a script, and a speech from subsequent Emerald Balls.

Bataille's correspondence includes thank you notes, welcome notes upon her installation as president, clippings regarding Bataille’s work at UNT, invitations, the book Frank W. Mayborn: a Man Who Made a Difference (which was separated from the collection) with accompanying note from the Mayborn School of Journalism, and correspondence from Lorrain Berger, a former UNT faculty member. The Berger correspondence refers to Bataille’s role as UNT president and includes Berger’s reactions to Bataille’s resignation, the establishment of the Lorraine E. Berger Endowed Scholarship Fund, Berger’s artwork, some of which was sent to Bataille and intended for donation to UNT upon Berger’s death, and photographs of Berger’s artwork.

The presidential files contain materials related to Bataille's appointment as University President, the president's annual reports as well as peer reviews of UNT, materials regarding Bataille's work with the North Texas Board of Regents and Board of Visitors, speeches given by Bataille, documents relating to Bataille's work with the Turkish Police Training Institute, certificates, and planning materials for various events.

Series 4 consists of headshots and other photographs of Bataille, magazines and other news clippings regarding UNT and Bataille's work, and digital media like presentations and photographs.

Artifacts and oversize materials in Series 5 include framed photographs, paperweights, a Texas State flag, President Bataille's regalia worn at commencements and Honor's Day, a scrapbook regarding Bataille's inauguration, select awards, and oversize letters, certificates, and publications.

Biographical Note

Dr. Gretchen M. Bataille was the 14th President of the University of North Texas (2006-2010). Originally from Indiana, Dr. Bataille earned her Bachelor and Master of Arts in English from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. She earned a doctorate in English from Drake University. Dr. Bataille previously served as the Chief Academic Officer of the University of North Carolina system. From 2005 to 2006, she was the Interim Chancellor of UNC’s North Carolina School of the Arts. Dr. Bataille was also a tenured Professor of English at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her previous positions include Provost and Academic Vice President at Washington State University, Chair of the English Department at Washington State University, acting Associate Dean of Instruction at California State Polytechnic University at Pomona, and English faculty at Iowa State University.
