Papers of the Dean of the College of Business Administration, O. J. Curry.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The bulk of the papers deal with the classes Dr. O. J. Curry taught from the 1930s until the 1960s.  The materials include handouts, quizes, bibliographies, and final exams. There is a small selection of speeches he gave in the 1940s, a small example of the articles he wrote in the 1960s, and his correspondence.

Biographical Note

Dr. Othel Jackson “O. J.” Curry (1904-1994) was the first dean of Business Administration (1942-1974). He attended a one room school until the eighth grade.  He received his high school diploma from Santa anna High School.  He would go on to earn a BBA (accounting) from the University of Texas, an MBA in finance from the same institutions, and a PhD in economics from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. Dr. Curry held a variety of jobs before joining the University of North Texas.  He was a high school athletics coach in Melvin, Texas; a connection plumber for Amerada Petroleum Company; the principal at the El Dorado, Texas, High School; the head o the Business Department at the Austin Senior High School; an instructor of economics at the University of Michigan; an associate professor of economics at the University of Arkansas; and a professor of accounting at the Wharton School of Finance and Industry, the University of Pennsylvania. During World War II he was a cost and price analyst, at the American Petroleum Institute. He joined the University of North Texas as the dean of the School of Business Administration in 1944.  He held that title until 1969. He retired from UNT in 1974. Dr. Curry was the co-author of many accounting and business textbooks, including Cost Accounting, Planning and Control. Dr. Curry served on many organizations including the Denton Chamber of Commerce, the American Association of Retired Teachers, the American Association of Retired Persons, the Denton Kiwanis Club, the Denton Charter Association, the Dallas chapter of the Financial Executives Institute, the Dallas Management Association, and the Dallas Chamber of Commerce (Research Committee).
