Scope and Contents of the Materials
The collection consists of Leon Breeden's extensive, and often self-selected archival materials from his entire career, during which time the One O'Clock Lab Band and the UNT Jazz Studies program rose to international prominence. Also present are personal recordings and writing, compositions, memorabilia, photos, and materials from his time at Texas Christian University, in New York City, and at Grand Prairie High School.Biographical Note

Item 1: Breeden: Big 'D', Texas March, 1947 August
Introductory note: "Dallas, Texas is located in the uppermost part of the state and is a center for commercial enterprises of all kinds. It is one of Texas' largest cities and has the 'Big City' atmosphere, especially to the people of the many small cities and towns surrounding it. The name 'Big D' has been used for many years as a friendly nickname for the city; therefore the name of this march uses that nickname because it is part of the color of Texas' cities. This march is dedicated to the prosperous people of prosperous city. Dallas, Texas."

March for concert band. Autograph score in pencil. 27 pages, spiral bound.
Note on inside cover: "Cowtown, U.S.A. was premiered on the National Broadcasting Company network August 6, 1948."
"I was never able to find the time to complete the four remaining planned marches when my work at TCU became extremely complex!"
"Note: The sweeping woodwinds relates to the strong winds that often sweep down 7th Street in downtown Fort Worth! I recall almost being blown over several times as I turned the corner of 7th and Throckmorton and/or Main Streets!"

Sketch in pencil, parts for solo cornet, horns. Also several out-of-order pages, no instrument identified, on National Broadcasting Company holograph paper. Found inside "Easter Parade" (Item 9). -
Item 5: Breeden: Gay Nineties Medley, 1950 December
Arranged by Leon Breeden for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Thor Johnson, Director.
Autograph score in pencil, 45 pages of music, followed by page "trying new stamp pad." Medley includes "Bicycle Built for Two," "In the Good Old Summertime," "Shine on Harvest Moon," "East Side, West Side," "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," "Give My Regards to Broadway."

Introductory note: "This arrangement was written in 1939 during my first year of college at Texas Wesleyan College at Fort Worth, Texas. It was performed by Don Gillis and the 'Musical Variety' Orchestra about one month after it was written."
