Abstract
Scope and Contents of the Materials
The Raza Chronicles: Latino History at UNT collection, (“la raza,” literally translated as “the race,” is a term that has varied meanings, but is used in this case to demonstrate ethnic or racial pride in Hispanic heritage) contains research notes, photographs and oral history interviews conducted in 2011 and 2012 for events held during Hispanic Heritage Month in September of 2012. UNT Hispanic Heritage Month events documented include the Raíces: History of Raza at UNT Symposium and a companion exhibit in the UNT Library’s Special Collections Reading Room. The Raza Chronicles collection represents the perspective of Latino students attending UNT from 1948 – 2012 and documents the growth of the Hispanic student population at UNT and the growing activism and importance of campus groups, like MASA (Mexican American Student Organization), ALAS (Association of Latin American Students), and HSHE (Hispanic Students for Higher Education). In addition, the collection includes information on the formation of campus chapters of Latina based national sororities, such as Chi Upsilon Sigma and Sigma Lambda Gamma. Information about other programs relevant to North Texas Latinos include the Pen Pals/Discover College Life project (a mentoring program through Dolores Huerta Elementary School in Ft. Worth) and other institutions’ efforts to promote and preserve Hispanic heritage.Collection Historical Note
