Biographical Note

Meritum Honor Society began on April 19, 1950 with fifteen senior women, selected by a faculty committee, joining an honor organization for women.  The basis of members’ selection included the following: their leadership, scholarship, character, and service. Meritum’s constitution lists goals to provide for cooperation among honor societies; to promote college loyalty; advance the spirit of service and fellowship among college women; maintain a high standard of scholarship; recognize and encourage leadership; and to stimulate and develop a finer type of college women. The membership were involved in campus activities such as freshman orientation and sponsoring the Honors Convocation to recognize outstanding students and professors. Meritum also participated in local charity work. They sponsored a Christmas party, later a program, for the children of a local orphanage, and raised money for the Denton Welfare Council intended to buy food and clothes for needy children. In 1966, Meritum petitioned for affiliation with the national organization Mortar Board. The new chapter of Mortar Board began began in 1968.
