Series 2 contains materials pertaining to Dr. Vann's interest in Charles Dicken's life and works. Subseries are arranged according to subject and material type.

Series 1: Subseries1: Box 2 is a previously existing arrangement. The arrangement was maintained with the exception of Folder 7 which was moved to Series 1: Subseries 1: Box 3: Folder 5.

Abstract

The Dr. J. Don Vann Manuscript Collection contains materials documenting the activities of University of North Texas English Professor Dr. J. Don Vann, a noted Dickens enthusiast and author specializing in Victorian periodical research. The collection contains numerous manuscripts as well as correspondence, notes, newsletters, brochures, clippings, memorabilia, syllabi, membership cards, program calendars, travel vouchers, and flyers.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection documents the activities of Dr. J. Don Vann, a University of North Texas Professor Emeritus in English and noted Dickens enthusiast. Included within the collection are materials pertaining to Dr. Vann's professional activities as a researcher, writer, and editor specializing in Victorian periodical research including manuscripts, correspondence, and notes for numerous scholarly articles and the book publications Victorian periodicals: a guide to research; Victorian novels in serial; and Periodicals of Queen Victoria's Empire: an exploration. His academic career as a University of North Texas Professor Emeritus in English and involvement with the Friends of the North Texas State University Libraries are documented through correspondence, clippings, syllabi, travel vouchers, and programs.

Also included within the collection are materials related to Dr. Vann's lifelong passion for Charles Dickens. His involvement with the Dickens Fellowship-including his founding of the Denton chapter-is reflected through correspondence, newsletters, program calendars, clippings, brochures, membership cards, and other materials. Other Dickens related materials not associated with the Dickens Fellowship are also contained including correspondence, memorabilia, brochures, clippings, and flyers.

Collection Historical Note

Dr. J. Don Vann is a retired University of North Texas English Professor, a noted Dickens enthusiast, and an author and editor of numerous scholarly articles and books regarding Victorian literature. During his tenure at UNT, Dr. Vann taught several courses in Victorian literature and was active in the Friends of the North Texas State University (now UNT) Libraries program. His passion for Charles Dickens’s life and works led to his involvement in the Dickens Fellowship organization and his founding of the Denton chapter of the Dickens Fellowship in 1987.
