A compilation of figure and subject studies, as well as photographs created by UNT Emeritus Professor Don R. Schol.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

This collection consists of two boxes of drawing studies and one box of photographs created by UNT Emeritus Professor and sculptor Don R. Schol. Subjects of the studies include religious iconography and sketches, figure studies, working sketches for reliefs and wood carvings, and studies for specific pieces. These drawings were created during the 1980s and 1990s. Subjects of the photographs detail the people and places of Denton County. The photographs were created in the late 1970s.

Collection Historical Note

University of North Texas Emeritus Professor and artist Don R. Schol’s educational career began in the mid-sixties. In 1963, Schol graduated valedictorian of his class from the University of Dallas with a BA in Philosophy. He entered the University of Texas MFA program in Sculpture and Drawing promptly after graduating and received his degree in 1966. Upon completion of his MFA, Schol enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Hawaii and Vietnam during the Vietnam conflict. Schol completed his active duty with the United States Army and began his teaching career at the University of North Texas as a professor of Studio Art in 1969. He spent 27 years teaching, and then in 1996, was named Associate Dean for Administrative Affairs with UNT’s College of Visual Arts and Design. Schol continued to teach during his tenure as Associate Dean. Professor Don R. Schol retired in 2013, becoming an UNT Emeritus Professor for the College of Visual Arts and Design.
