Biographical Note

V. Lane Rawlins was president of the University of North Texas from 2010 to 2014. He was made President Emeritus upon his retirement. Prior to working at UNT he was the president of Washington State University and the University of Memphis.

Veldon Lane Rawlins was born in 1937 in Idaho. He attended Idaho Stte University, graduating from Brigham Young University in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He earned a doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley.

He joined Washington State University as a professor of economics in 1968. He served as the department chair in 1977 to 1981 and provost from 1982 to 1986. He then moved to the University of Alabama to take the position as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs (1986-1991). That was followed by becoming the president of Memphis state University. He oversaw the renaming the school as University of Memphis. He returned to Washington State University in 2000, to become the president of that institution. Rawlins retired from Washington State University in 2006, returning to the economics faculty.

In April, 2010, Rawlins was appointed to a one-year term as president by the Board of Regents. The search for a permanent president continued. In November, 2010, Rawlins accepted the offer to become the university’s permanent president.

A labor economist, he co-authored (with Robert F. Cook and Charles F. Adams) Public Service Employment: The experience of a Decade.
